This video series was developed to simplify the 4 basic parts of Medicare (Parts A, B, C, and D) to help make your Medicare choices easier. All information provided is taken directly from the official U.S. Government Medicare handbook Medicare & You 2011 and other supplemental Medicare publications. The first 7 programs cover the Medicare basics and are titled; Part 1 Medicare Overview, Part 2 Eligibility & Enrollment, Part 3 Medicare Parts A & B, Part 4 Choosing a Medicare Plan, Part 5 Medigap & Advantage Plans, Part 6 Medicare Part D, Part 7 Your Medicare Rights.

  3. Budget: "Pay now or Pay later" – Advantage Plans verses Medigap Plan F
Subject: “Zero Premium Plans” verses “Fixed Monthly Fee”
    Advantage Plans

Advantage Plans can have $0 cost per month, including Part D drug coverage, but you will pay the deductibles and co-payments. The math is if you total your cost for the year is over $1800, then you have spent $150 per month. If you have very few health problems, and your family history backs this up, then this could be the best choice. The pay later comes into effect if you develop serious health problems. This also hurts in the fact that to change coverage, your health conditions would be looked at. The Zero premium plans will have the highest deductibles, and sometimes less coverage. But it gives you Peace of Mind in the fact that you don't have a monthly premium to deal with.
    Medigap Plan F
Medigap Plan F takes care of all the deductibles and co-payments, and would have a fixed monthly fee. You see your doctor as much as you want. This one gives you Peace of Mind with the assurance that a surprise health problem won't cost you any more money.

  4. Lifestyle - Advantage Plans verses Medigap Plan F:
Subject: Do you travel out of state and need coverage out of state?
    Advantage Plans
will limit where you can get your coverage, depending on which plan you select. Some will not let you cross county lines. This could restrict your ability to travel. They will take care of emergencies, but a normal office visit will not be covered.
MediGap Plan F will restrict you only if they don't accept Medicare. If you are an RV'er, or the kids are in different states or other parts of the same state, your health coverage travels with you. This means you can travel anywhere in the USA and receive your health care.

  5. Choice – Advantage Plans verses Medigap Plan F:
Subject: Do you travel out of state and need coverage out of state?
    Advantage Plans
will limit you on which doctors, hospitals and service providers that you can use. Depending upon the plan, you can go from severe to a light restriction.
With Medigap Plan F, all you have to do is ask if they accept Medicare. This means you can travel anywhere in the USA and receive your health care.

  6. Paper work – Advantage Plans verses Medigap Plan F:
    Advantage Plans
will give you plenty of reading material. When my wife first took over her mothers care, I was in the other room when I heard this anguished moan from the other room. When I got there and asked what was wrong, she gave me this hand full of papers, 6 pages no less. At the end of the 6th page it stated, "This is not a bill." A few days later, the same amount of paper showed up, and it was the bill. To add to the confusion of paperwork, you get the bills from doctors, hospitals and the service providers that are not covered in full by the Advantage Plan.
With Medigap Plan F, all you will receive is a quarterly report from Medicare to tell you what Medicare services you have used. You usually have no contact with the Medigap company, because they deal with and through Medicare. The doctors, hospitals and service providers deal through Medicare and only receive checks from the Medigap companies. So you don't have to ask the question; "Do you take this company?"

  7. Medicare Prescription Drug Plan - Advantage verses Medigap Plan F:
    Advantage Plans
will give you the choice of having a built in Prescription Drug Plan.
Medigap Plan F does not have prescription drug coverage. You will always have to purchase the Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

  8. Coverage Advantage verses Medigap Plan F:
    Advantage Plans
come with the option to have Medicare Prescription Drug included in their coverage. They do provide similar coverage to Part A and B of Original Medicare and may offer extra benefits that are not covered by Original Medicare. They require people that enroll in their plans to use certain doctors, hospitals, and other service providers These plans usually have a monthly premium, in addition to the Part B premium, and a co-payment for covered services. You can't use Medigap Plans with an Advantage Plan.
Medigap Plan F allows people to choose their own doctors, hospitals, and other providers, but you will have to join Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to have your prescriptions covered.

  9. Services not covered with Medicare
    Medicare
does not pay for long-term care, routine dental care, dentures, cosmetic surgery, acupuncture, hearing aids, and exams for fitting hearing aids. Medicare does not pay for some Diabetic supplies, but the Part D usually picks up what Medicare doesn't pay. Also, you will not get a private room (unless medically necessary), television or telephone.
Some Medicare Advantage Plans may cover these services. Check with your plan for more information.
